WWJD.4- On Abortion

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)

To be an ambassador for Christ means that we are always living a life, full of words and deeds, that is Christ-like. The cliché WWJD was huge in the ‘90’s, but should not be overlooked in the 2010’s. This simple question can draw us towards seeking the face of God to conform us into His likeness when asked and applied correctly in all areas of our lives. But asking the question is never enough, we must also take steps to do what Jesus would do.

WWJD.4- On Abortion
The debate around abortion seems to be one that is unending, but when understood biblically, life begins upon conception (Job 10:8-12) and therefore should be both treasured and cared for. Additionally, regardless of how life was conceived whether it is between two consenting adults or a case where rape is involved, terminating life is always wrong and is murder of life (Gen 9:6).

Life begins at the moment of conception. Throughout Scripture we read of how a child before being born and one that exists outside of the womb are considered to be the same. Jeremiah even wrote that if he were to have been terminated in the womb, his grave would in his mother’s womb showing us that life does not begin outside the womb, but within (Jer 20:17). In addition to life and personhood beginning at conception, so does a person’s sinful nature (Ps 51:5). Even before life coming into existence, God has a plan for that child and who are we to go against the will of God (Gal 1:15-16; Psa 139:13-14).

In contrast to ending the life of an unborn child, Scriptures encourage the opposite. The child is to be cared for and loved by the parents and procreation is one of the primary purposes of marriage (Gen 1:27). They are gifts that are given by God (Ps 127:3-5) and we know that God is the good Father who gives good gifts. The Bible, in fact, denounces any action that would result in the murder of the unborn person (Exod 21:22-23).

In summary, the termination of life, born or unborn, is murder and should not be sought out by the parents. Those who have been given the gift of a child should carry the baby through term and train the child to live as God would intend them to (Prov 22:6).

So when concerned with the life of an unborn child, think to yourself WWJD.
