Overflow Daily...ish: Offerings

12 He who offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah. 13 And his offering was one silver plate whose weight was 130 shekels, one silver basin of 70 shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering; 14 one golden dish of 10 shekels, full of incense; 15 one bull from the herd, one ram, one male lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 16 one male goat for a sin offering; 17 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five male goats, and five male lambs a year old. This was the offering of Nahshon the son of Amminadab. [1]
Numbers 7:12-17

If reading today’s text was tough for you then strap in because you are about to read the exact same gifts being presented to God 11 more times. Could it be that Moses was running out of ideas and so he went on repeating himself for each of the tribes? Was Moses scribing down everything that was happening in real-time like a courtroom stenographer for his diary? Why is it necessary for us today to read how each tribe of Israel offer up to God the same offering for two pages when it could have easily been handled with just one paragraph?

We do not know for sure the reason, but we know that the wisdom of God put it there for our benefit. One thing that we learn is the seriousness which every single tribe, collectively the people of God, took in presenting their offering. Neither one of the tribes thought that it would be okay for them to offer some of their offering. Each one presented what was right and appropriate and ordained by God. Likewise, we are reminded that we too must present to God an offering. And that offering must be right and true because we know that there are offerings which can be offered up to God which he has no desire to receive (See Isaiah 58 for an example).

But not only do we see the importance for offering to God what He desires, we also see that He delights in each gift presented. Even though the gifts are repeated for a total of 12 times, “God is interested in every part of spiritual service rendered by His people.” (Reformation Study Bible). God takes delight in receiving from His people. Maybe you currently work at a job where you feel overworked and underappreciated. I encourage you to remember that you are not only working for man, but for God. So continue to work with integrity and with joy, because you know that your service is for God and He delights in spiritual service from His people.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Alex
