“Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: 8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.” Proverbs 30:7-8 (NIV)

In a speech made in 1863, Abraham Lincoln said, "We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven; we have been preserved these many years in peace and prosperity; we have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us, and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us."
Agur’s prayer in Proverbs provides us with a beautiful glimpse inside the heart a man completely satisfied with God. His only prayer was to not be lead into temptation and to never have too much or too little. He understood, like Solomon, that the things of this world are good, but not necessary and sufficient for true happiness. He also knew that the downside to abundance is forgetfulness of a loving God. On the other hand, he also knew that in poverty he may curse God. How many of us pray in this manner? In a culture that demands and craves the newest technology or the latest and greatest device, it’s strange to live in such a way in which you are completely satisfied with what God has given to you. I encourage you to take today to appreciate all that God has given to you and examine if you find happiness in the things you have or if the things you have define your happiness.
