Busyness

“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the duty of all mankind.” Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV)

If any of you are like me, you are very busy. Busy with Church, work, personal, familial, and social activities that all compete for your time and to which we find it difficult at times to say no. The danger with this is that we when we choose to do something, we are neglecting another. The problem is not that we are doing something, or even that we are busy. The problem, however, lies in the fact that we can get caught up in our busyness and not accomplish anything at all. The issue is that we are allowing our busyness to hinder us from guarding our hearts and our minds and our relationship with God. Tim Kreider may have explained it best when he wrote “Obviously your life cannot possibly be silly or trivial or meaningless if you are so busy, completely booked, in demand every hour of the day.”

Life can get hectic, but just because we are doing something does not necessarily correlate to us doing something meaningful. Solomon, a wise man of God, went out seeking for purpose in this life and records his opine on his discovery. What he ultimately discovered was that everything in this world is vanity of vanities and meaningless (Ecc. 1:14). A man who had the means and the ability to acquire anything he could wish was not able to find anything of substance. If you read his discourse in the book of Ecclesiastes, you will discover that truth and relevance is finally found; and it is simply to “fear God and keep his commandments” (Ecc. 12:13).

So what makes up your life’s work? What will come about at the end of your life when all is said and done? Will you be able to look back and proudly proclaim that you have built something of meaning or will it all have been for naught? And more importantly, throughout all the busyness that life is, were you able to guard your heart and your mind and strengthen your relationship with your Father God in order to find true purpose in your works?

“I declare a moratorium on the word busy. Everyone is busy, we get it. Busy is the default status. Let us know if that changes.”- Dean Shareski
