Memorial Day 2019

For many of us, Memorial Day is a welcome holiday as we get a day off work, or a time for relaxation with friends and family, or the beginning of summer. But Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, was meant to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to their country while serving in the U.S. Military. And although believers hold a citizenship which is not of this world this does not mean that we should cast this holiday aside. In reality, we have a dual citizenship: one to our Lord and Savior who sits on the throne in Heaven and another to the earthly country we are a part of.

Perhaps this whole article is controversial to you, but I would like to encourage us to give thanks on Memorial Day while also handling it with great care. Soldiers demonstrate Christian attributes. They do so by bravely going into war zones, far from family and comforts, to potentially sacrifice their own lives for the good of others and for the glory of their country. The same characteristics of a good soldier are also used in the Scriptures to describe a true believer. We also bravely serve our Lord, Jesus Christ, and are willing to lay down our earthly lives for the glory of God and for the salvation of others. We see this exemplified to the greatest degree by Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins.

On Memorial Day, let us ask the question, “For what should I live and be prepared to die for?” My prayer is that we are reminded that we are all image bearers of God and that we will live for the one who has created us, and created us for His glory.

Grace and Peace,
Alexander Galvez

On August 11th, 2011, a roadside bomb detonated in the Kandahar province killing several soldiers as they were patrolling the area. The unit that was hit was a part of 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment. Of the five soldiers who lost their lives one was one of my best friends Jordan Morris. I ask that you please join me in praying for Jordan’s Family. I believe that Jordan knew the Lord and eagerly await to join Him in worshiping our God in eternity.
